+ WHAT SIZE ARE THE PORTIONS AND HOW MANY SERVINGS IN EACH?

Most portions are roughly 8 oz. each, plus or minus by a small amount. Keep reading as one size does not fit each specie the same. Each portion is individually vacuum-sealed and arrive blast-frozen. Your subscription box contains roughly (6) 8 oz pieces or about (12) 4 oz. servings (note: the Sampler Box is slightly less with (4) 8 oz pieces or (8) 4 oz. servings) . It will contain a variety of 2-3 species and depending on portion weight, you may receive  portions. Each portion serves roughly 2 people, depending on appetite. Some species may be filets and fillet weight can vary slightly. Some fillets may be 6-8 oz. each. For example prawns & scallops come individually frozen and in sealed bags, and coho salmon meat will always be in 16 oz. sealed pouch. Visit our PRODUCT purchase page to get a full description of each species.

Keep in mind that we always reserve the right to balance out the mix and/or make Catch of the Month substitutes when necessary (though rarely). This is based on current and always fluctuating market cost of each specie selection. Our end goal is to meet and not increase the current box price while keeping our commitment and never compromising quality of what you receive. We believe you'll see the value of product per box and it should exceed our offer price value.

+ I DON’T SEE SOME OF THE SPECIES OR VARIETIES OF SEAFOOD I MIGHT WANT TO PURCHASE?

We’ve only just begun! We’ll be adding to our product list. You can watch for seasonal offerings throughout the year with availability. Keep your eyes out for some great offers giving you reason to gather! Don't hesitate to send us an email requesting something near and dear to your stomach! As we get more of the same requests, we'll provide.

+ CAN I ORDER YOUR SAUCES/SPICE BLENDS SEPARATELY?

Absolutely. They will ship USPS when ordered by themselves and for now we ship them out weekly. If ordered with a seafood box, we'll add them in with that box. If you have a subscription, we'll put them in with the first order, and with a simple email to us you can order as you like and we'll send you an invoice making it easy to pay online. Again, we inlcude in the next monthly shipment or in advance if you just can't wait. Keep in mind that these little bundles make great little hostess gifts.

+ WHAT IS THE SHELF LIFE OF YOUR SAUCES?

Each bottle/tin has a "best by" date printed on its label. We suggest that the sauces be used within 3 months of opening to enjoy the fresh quality. We like to pull them from the refrigerator for about 15 minutes and give them a few good shakes before using to mix all the ingredients. These were first designed and created in our personal kitchen, but for food safety reasons and to adhere to strict FDA regulations, we create, bottle and label these small batches in a certified kitchen offsite.

+ IS IT POSSIBLE TO GET LARGER QUANTIES OF SEAFOOD?

Now that's love! Absolutely! We’d be happy to fill an order for larger needs. If you want something different than the quantities listed, or different mixes on a regular basis, just let us know. We'll try and accommodate. Jus send us a quick email, let us know what you’re thinking. + DELIVERIES – DO I NEED TO BE HOME? WHAT IF I’M OUT OF TOWN?

If you happen to be at work or out and about, your box will be waiting for you like any other delivery. We have packed your seafood with dry ice, surrounded by a cozy blanket of insulated packing material, all nestled within an outer cardboard shipping box, so it remains frozen for the trek to your home. We do suggest that once you recive your box that day, with a towel or glove, carefully remove, the dry ice and place in a safe location, away from children and pets to allow it to evaporate. This is REALLY COLD and can cause skin burns! Now for the goodness - open your white box and remove your vacuum-sealed frozen portions and put them in your freezer as soon as possible. Be gentle so not to break the vacuum pack seals. If you will be out of town during a scheduled delivery, not a problem. Just let us know and we’ll work with you to reschedule or have it left with a neighbor so they can receive it for you, keeping in mind that we've carefully calculated the amount of dry ice to get from us to you and not the extra time that it may be left outside once it is delivered. Sometimes things happen in transit out of our control, like weather conditions and lots of other variables. If something isn't right when your deliver makes it to your door step, please let us know. If you have a subscription, you can always log in to your account and "skip" a delivery and we'll resume your delivery the following month!

+ WHAT DO I DO WITH MY SEAFOOD UPON ARRIVAL?

Place it in a freezer as soon as possible. If one or two portions has the beginning of thawing present, don’t be concerned if the individual portion is still cool to touch. Place in freezer and all will be good. Keep in mind that this has never been frozen and it's first freeze was in a very FRESH state! We suggest that you plan to consume first, any portions where the vacuum packages may have lost some of their seal, it can happen on occasion in transit. Cold plastic is very brittle and the vacuum sealed packages should be handled with care to maintain their integrity. If several of your seals arrive broken – we want to hear from you and we'll see that you're taken care of!

+ PIN BONES? WHAT ARE THEY, AND WHY DOES FISHGIRL SEAFOOD LEAVE THEM IN?

Consider it OUR certified seal of FRESHER and premium grade seafood. This allows us to freeze the fish within hours of catch, locking in the "just out of water freshness". Fish that is "deboned" must first go the the processing plant versus freezing right away, this can add another 2 days onto the "out of the water fresh" time, adding to its degradation Secondly, pin bones provide that natural framework to keep your portions in "just caught" pristine condition. Additionaly our fish are hand cut one by one not by industrial machines which allows us to maintain a higher quality in texture. The difference is easy to see even when compared side by side with a factory processed fresh or frozen high end super market variety. Here's the pin bone removal scoop. Not a big deal! You have three options. With culinary tweezers you keep in your kitchen, simply remove them prior to cooking, take them out after cooking or remove them with your fork and set aside, as you enjoy your meal. It all works! There is no right or wrong way, but only yours! Note: Albacore tuna loins are pin bone free and some species you will soon come to know have little or no pin bones even present! You do however need to be on the look out. This is a wild, product of nature, and you may discover a small piece here or there.

+ WHY DOES FISHGIRL SELL WILD OVER FARM RAISED SEAFOOD?

The wild advantage provides a richer color, firmer texture and better flavor than industrially-produced farmed salmon and seafoods. This superiority results from a life spent feeding on the ocean's natural foods while swimming against strong currents of the cold, clean North Pacific. Let's use wild salmon for example. Its flavor depends upon its genetic makeup as well as the environment in which feeds. The greater Pacific Northwest including Alaskas icy pure waters produce salmon with superior flavor and fat content. This fat is necessary for their long journey from ocean back up to their birth river. These fish grow in pristine waters, free of antibiotics, pesticides, growth hormones and artificial coloring agents. Here's an little eye opener - The Audubon’s Living Oceans Campaign found that farmed salmon are fed more antibiotics per pound of livestock than are any other farmed animal. A field trip to a farmed fish processing plant makes it easy to see that what ends up in the store meat counter as "farmed", often times has been cut out of an overall unhealthy fish as a result of some of the above mentioned conditions.

+ WOULD YOU EVER CONSIDER SELLING FARM RAISED SEAFOOD OF ANY KIND?

We are open to providing farmed seafood but won't consider selling it in the near forseeable future until strict conditions and practices meet our environmentally sensitive standards and product is comparable in flavor, appearance and texture of wild that we have access to. Our wild seafood is sustainably caught and under strictly managed guidelines.

+ HOW SHOULD I THAW MY SEAFOOD AND WHAT IS THE SHELF LIFE ONCE THAWED?

Thaw 8-10 hours or overnight at or below 38 degrees Fahrenheit in the refrigerator in it's sealed package. If you spontaneously decide to have it for dinner and you just got home, quick thaw by fully submerging frozen package in cool water in the sink or a large bowl, for approximately 20 – 30 minutes just until contents are flexible, then immediately cook. Whoops - change of dinner plans? It happens! We like to eat our fish the day of thaw, but it's just fine to be refrigerated for an additonal 2-3 days in the sealed package. Keep in mind, seafood looses quality from the time of thaw to consumption. You are still many days ahead in freshness of the seafood you purchase at your local market - REALLY!

+ CAN THE FISHGIRL SALMON & TUNA BE EATEN RAW?

By all means! The king, coho and sockeye salmon, in addtion to the albacore tuna loins are all sashimi grade! Yum! Get your sushi makings ready and get rolling! Any of these dipped in our sauces will melt in your mouth! Seriously though, the individual handling of all our fish ensures the quality demanded by any raw preparation, but in a more measurable way, the freezing process at 40 degrees below F. kills any parasites that could be in the fish, which would otherwise be killed by heat in cooking. You are more protected than eating fresh sushi in the best sushi restaurant not previously frozen.

+ HOW DO YOU CHOOSE WHICH SPECIES GO IN EACH BOX?

Prior to each monthly shipment, our seafood is hand selected based on seasonality and what we’ve been able to source from fishermen co-ops we partner with. We balance that with the best quality of each species available and factor in a rotational variety for our customers and current and fluctuating market value. The short of it? There's no algorithm when you're dealing with nature!

+ I’M CURIOUS ABOUT YOUR PACKAGING?

We pay a little more for this, but we’re committed all the way around to our environment. Our hope is that you see value in it too! Our insulated packaging pad replaces any use of extruded polystyrene or EPS boxes. The pad itself is constructed of some recycled cotton fiber, which is biodegradable and then covered with a moisture resistant film, which is recyclable. All outer boxes are biodegradable and/or recyclable. If you live local and want to store them up and drop them by, we'd be happy to accept them and see you too! We've come a long way and graduated from styro and gel packs, but continue to search for the next best thing.

+ CAN I CANCEL MY FUTURE ORDERS IF I’M NOT SATISFIED?

Yes, you can cancel at any time, and we’ll refund in full the remainder of your future deliveries. To cancel, contact by email at: support@fishgirlseafood.com or by phone at (971)232-2074

+ WHERE DO YOU SHIP TO AND HOW ARE SHIPPING RATES APPLIED?

We ship to all states in the U.S. There are too many restrictions to ship dry ice internationally. We pass along to our customers our discounted shipping rates for product leaving our door to yours plus a small handling fee. You are given a choice at check out what carrier you'd like to deliver your package by. In zones that require 3 or more days on a truck or there is extreme heat, we won't inlcude truck, (the lesser expensive method) as an option because we can't guarantee our product getting to your door in the condition we'd like it to.
